Taralga Road - Gomonomarro Creek Culvert Upgrade
In 2022, Upper Lachlan Shire Council received funding to upgrade a 250m section along Taralga Road following significant deterioration of the existing pavement surface caused by elevated groundwater levels and creek flows.
Over the years, Taralga Road has been susceptible to flooding during heavy rainfall events, resulting in numerous road closures which has caused disruptions to transportation and emergency services.
Reliance Engineering Services were engaged by Upper Lachlan Shire Council to provide engineering services during the stages of project development and delivery.
The project was jointly funded under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangement (DRFA) and Council’s Capital Works Program.
The scope of works included:
Pre construction investigations
Engineering Design
Site Establishment
Implementation of Erosion and Sediment Controls
Construction of a temporary sidetrack
Demolition of existing culvert structure
Rock excavation and subgrade preparation
Reconstruction of roadside table drains
Construction of a triple row 900mm piped culvert
Installation of rock scour protection
Road reconstruction including insitu stabilisation
Bitumen sealing and delineation.
Reliance Engineering provided the following scope of services:
Consulted with the Department of Primary Industries to define NSW Fisheries design expectations and requirements for the proposed culvert upgrade
Liaised with an environmental consultant to complete Review of Environmental Factors and Aquatic Biodiversity Assessment
Prepared and obtained environmental clearances for proposed works
Catchment and hydraulic analysis
Culvert design
Road geometric design
Tender preparation and evaluation
Contract Administration
Project Superintendency
Monitoring and enforcing Contractor compliance.
The new culvert design has greater capacity to withstand the anticipated peak design flows up to and including 10% AEP storm events, significantly improving the sites resilience to withstand adverse weather conditions. Additionally, the new design provides minimal maintenance costs, improves safety and provides lost-lasting benefits for Council and road users.
The project was successfully completed by AJ Parsons Pty Ltd and commissioned for opening in November 2024.
