Cullulla Road Culvert Replacement

In 2022, Goulburn Mulwaree Council received funding to upgrade a 520m section along Cullulla Road following dilapidation of the existing low-lying causeway and pavement surface. Reliance Engineering Services were engaged by Goulburn Mulwaree Council to assist during the stages of project development and delivery.

Over the years, the existing Cullulla Road causeway was susceptible to flooding during heavy rainfall events which resulted in numerous road closures, preventing local residents from accessing the nearest township of Tarago and Goulburn. Cullulla Road is an important link for local residents and also provides an alternative route for motorist travelling between Canberra and the South Coast of New South Wales.

The project improves the resilience to natural disaster, ensuring uninterrupted community connectivity despite adverse weather conditions.

The project was undertaken by Coopers Earthmoving and Haulage Pty Ltd and included:

  • Demolition of existing low-lying concrete causeway structure.

  • Construction of a two-lane 160m side-track to ensure the road remained open throughout the duration of works.

  • Bulk earthworks including the treatment and preparation of the saturated subgrade.

  • Construction of a multi-cell concrete box culvert structure to provide greater flood immunity on Cullulla Road whilst improving the vertical alignment.

  • Reconstruction of 520m of carriageway to improve the vertical and horizontal alignments including the installation road safety barriers.

Due to the urgency required to deliver this project as result of the dilapidated road infrastructure, challenging conditions were experienced during construction which included unfavourable subgrade and weather conditions.

The project was successful completed and commissioned for opening in December 2022.
